Purity culture is a set of beliefs and values that promotes abstinence until marriage and often shames individuals for engaging in sexual activity outside of marriage. These beliefs can lead to feelings of guilt, shame, and anxiety around sex, which can negatively impact sexual functioning and satisfaction. I work with individuals to unpack the messages and beliefs they have internalized from purity culture and develop a healthier, more sex-positive mindset. This may involve exploring personal values around sex, developing a better understanding of sexual anatomy and pleasure, and practicing communication and consent skills.
It's important to note that purity culture recovery therapy is not meant to invalidate anyone's personal beliefs or values but rather to help individuals heal from the negative effects of a culture that may have caused harm.
